The exact origin of the teddy bear is not certain, but there are two stories that seem to explain the creation of the teddy bear at around the same time. In the first, President Teddy Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear cub offered to him following an unsuccessful hunting trip in Michtom did not use a label for his jointed mohair plush bears, and this has made authenticating his bears much more difficult.
The early Ideal bears are similar to Steiff bears, but have larger ears set low on the head and feet that are slightly pointed. In the second story, German toy designer Richard Steiff is believed to have viewed performing bears in a circus when he visited America, giving him the idea for a toy bear with jointed arms and legs that could turn its head like a doll.

Chad Valley is a long-established brand of toys in the United Kingdom owned by Sainsbury’s. The company has its roots in a printing business established by Anthony Bunn Johnson in Birmingham in the early 19th century. Under the management of his son Joseph and grandson Alfred the company moved to the suburb of Harborne , in the valley of a stream called the Chad Brook , giving its name to the Chad Valley district, from which the company name is derived.
Chad Valley made a decision to expand their range to soft toys before World War I. They mass-produced their new Teddy bears in Harborne .

Established in Merrythought is one of the oldest and most prestigious of England’s toy manufacturers. For over 60 years the magic of Merrythought has delighted adults and children of all ages with a range of traditional hand crafted toys that are more than mere playthings. A Merrythought toy is a joy forever – a treasured family friend to be passed down from generation to generation – valued heirloom that’s guaranteed to give year after year of lasting pleasure.
The history of Merrythought provides a fascinating insight into early 19th Century England – a period of considerable industrial change and development. The story actually began in when Mr B. Holmes the present Managing Directors grandfather went into partnership with a Mr GHI Laxton to open a spinning mill in Yorkshire to quite simply manufacture mohair yarn from imported raw materials. Holmes and Lax ton decided to buy Lyons plush weaving company and realised they had to find something to do with the mohair yarns.
The Sales Director of the combined companies knew two men who were to play a vital role in the development of Merrythought. Both were keen to join Holmes and Laxton to produce Merrythought Toys and together arranged to rent space in one of Coalbrookdale’s foundry buildings. Over the years the original Merrythought factory site at Coalbrookdale now Ironbridge which was purchased from the Coalbrookdale Co in has seen considerable improvement.
New buildings have been added but the large brick building built by the iron foundry in is still used today to lovingly create each and every Merrythought Toy.
