Ask the Expert: What Age Should Teenagers Start Dating?
Remember your own fifth-grade rumor mill? The buzz surrounding classmates who were going out? Decades later, I still wonder about this gossip. Did this mean my friends were kissing during recess, riding bikes together after school, or just liking each other from a comfortable and benign distance? If I am musing upon this now, imagine how quizzical I am about my own two daughters and their landscape of dating.
Perhaps you think, “she’s still young, she doesn’t know a thing about dating,” or you’re afraid your teenager might do something illegal, like.
Question: “How young is too young to be in a romantic relationship? Often, the younger we are, the less mature we are due to a lack of life experience. When we are just beginning to figure out who we are, we may not be firmly grounded enough spiritually to form solid romantic attachments and may be more prone to making unwise decisions that can leave us with emotional, physical, psychological, and spiritual damage. Being in a relationship puts one in almost constant temptation, especially as emotions begin to develop and the attraction to the other person deepens.
Young teens—even older teens—are besieged by hormonal and societal pressures that seem at times almost unbearable. Each day brings new feelings—doubts, fears, and confusion coupled with joys and exhilaration—which can be very confusing. Young people spend much of their time just figuring out who they are and how they relate to the world and the people around them. To add the pressure of a relationship at this stage seems almost too much to ask, especially when the other person is experiencing the same upheaval.
Such early relationships make it more difficult to avoid damage to the delicate and still-forming self-image, not to mention the problem of resisting temptation. If being marriage-minded is still far off, it is probably too early to begin dating or courtship. Much safer for all concerned are group activities where young people can develop social skills and friendships without the pressure and inherent difficulties of romantic attachments.

By Daniel Bates. Young love: A study by York University in Toronto, Canada, has found dating has a damaging impact on children posed by models. Boys and girls who start dating too young are more likely to have behavioural problems than those who wait for love, a study has found. Pre-teens are not able to cope with the emotional strain of a relationship and going through the stress can have damaging effects. The researchers discovered that child daters are twice as likely to have unsafe sex, use alcohol and indulge in risky behaviours.
Any boy or girl who starts dating at 11 is in the at risk group and that their parents should be concerned – because they are more likely to lie and cheat. Those who waited for romance to blossom, by contrast, were typically aged around 14 and had no social or emotional difficulties as a result of their interactions. The Canadian study adds to the evidence that allowing your child to mature before becoming involved with somebody is the best way for them to grow up. Researchers at York University in Toronto monitored students from 12 schools in the area between and to come to their conclusions.

When Should You Let Your Kid Start Dating?
If you begin spending a lot of time with someone of the opposite sex in person, on the phone, or even through letter writing or E-mail, the attraction will likely grow. ‘.
How should parents approach this situation? Consider children of both genders. Answer: When a family talks to me about having a young teenage daughter who’s interested in dating, I think about a couple of things. First of all, most year-olds may be interested but aren’t interested in dating but aren’t actually interested in being on a date. And so I think it’s perfectly appropriate for her to become interested and having relationships with boys and being interested in the opposite sex but not necessarily wanting to spend time, dating like you would think about a or year-old dating.
The other thing that happens is sometimes there are year-olds out there who actually look like they’re 16 or 17 and are engaging in this kind of interest simply because they’re getting a lot of attention from older boys. It makes a big difference what the issue is in terms of how a parent should respond. For parents of a normally developing year-old who is interested in the opposite sex, group activities are probably the best way for that year-old to get comfortable with herself in the company of boys, and for parents to feel like they’re not discouraging her interest but also not providing access or over-supporting, if you will, her interest in dating.
For that year-old who looks more like she’s 16 and is getting the attention of older teenage boys I think sometimes a closer relationship with that teenage daughter — with her mother and her father — is probably the best antidote. Because the teenage daughter really needs to know that the most important relationships in her life are really her parent’s relationship with her rather than the boyfriend. If there is some problem in the parent child relationship it’s not uncommon for these somewhat mature appearing year-olds to seek supported interest in the opposite sex.
And sometimes for this age group that ends in problems that most families really wouldn’t want to have to address over time. Shows Good Morning America.
